A Kilkenny building contractor was fatally wounded after a nail gun he was trying to repair accidentally fired.

Joe Brennan, who was in his late 50s and from Stephen Street in Kilkenny, died after he was hit in the chest by a nail on Saturday afternoon.

He had been trying to fix the machine in his workshop at home when the incident happened.

He was brought to St Luke’s Hospital, Kilkenny but died later from his injuries.

Separately, the Health Safety Authority is investigating the death of a man in his 60s in Co Leitrim who was killed while transporting a mini-digger on a trailer.

The man is understood to have been crushed between the vehicle and the trailor.

The incident happned on a minor road in the Aughnasheelin area at around 6.30pm.

The victim's body was taken to Sligo General Hospital, where a post-mortem examination was carried out.
