A labrador called Putóg was rescued by Howth inshore lifeboat after it was stranded by the rising tide on a sandbank off Sutton on Monday.

The alarm was raised at 9.50pm when emergency services were notified that a man and his dog were stranded on a sandbank off Burrow Beach.

The man swam to safety and was tended to onshore by some locals who heard his shouts.

Four-year-old Putóg (which translated means gut in Irish) remained on the sandbank and was rescued by the volunteer lifeboat crew of Declan McManus, Joss Walsh and Killian O’Reilly before being returned to its owner.

Howth RNLI helmsman Declan McManus said: “We were pleased to have been able to respond and launch so quickly.

“We urge people to be aware of their surroundings and check local tide times, as a fast-rising tide can catch people out in that area.”
