Gardaí investigate Lucan cash–in–transit robbery

Suspect held security guard at gunpoint before taking cashbox

Gardaí are investigating the robbery of a cash–in–transit van in Lucan, Co Dublin on Tuesday.

At about 12.20pm a man with a handgun approached the transit van security driver as he was making a cash delivery to a bank and held him at gunpoint. The man then forced the security guard to hand over the cash box and left the scene in a getaway vehicle.

Gardaí believe the suspect left the scene in a silver or grey VW Golf, with an 04 Westmeath car registration.

The incident occurred outside a bank on Main Street in Lucan. A spokesman for the gardaí said “at approximately 12.40pm a VW Golf car was found on fire at River Forest estate, Leixlip. This car had been driven onto a green area at the rear of San Carlo Senior National School and set alight.”

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who witnessed the robbery, or who may have seen the vehicle in question in the area between 12.30pm and 1pm to come forward. Gardaí said the vehicle may have been driving in the River Forest Estate, Captains Hill, or on Distillery Lane, Leixlip, Co Kildare during that time.
