The news of Pat Hickey's arrest in Rio broke yesterday but the sensational story is likely to develop further today. For now, the embattled 71-year-old has temporarily stepped aside as president of the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) and all other Olympic roles.

Back to college

If parents are concerned about back to school costs, there's even worse news when their children start college. The vast majority of students attending third level institutions will be financially supported by their parents over the next year with the average parent spending €447 each month, Conor Pope reports.

Trump

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has reshuffled his campaign team for the second time in two months. Conservative political website Breitbart executive chairman Stephen Bannon is now in as chief executive. Commentators say Trump is spurning efforts to moderate his campaign.

Majorca shooting

An Irish man has been shot dead in a Majorcan holiday resort in what appeared to be a gangland killing. It is believed the killing is related to the Hutch/Kinahan feud but police now think the dead man may have been a victim of mistaken identity.

Dublin bikes advertising

Plans to erect commercial advertising screens in Dublin 4 as part of the Dublin Bikes contract have been described as "nasty" "contemptible" "tacky" and "grossly offensive" by An Taisce's heritage officer.
