Residents in the Co Donegal town of Glenties are divided over plans for a local nightclub to open at one minute past midnight on St Stephen's Day.

Brian Carr, chair of the Glenties Community Group, said the town's population was expected to double that night due to those attending the nightclub seconds after Christmas Day ends.

Pubs and nightclubs are barred from selling alcohol on two days of the year; Good Friday and Christmas Day.

“Some locals feel a grievance,” Mr Carr told Newstalk Breakfast.

The Limelight nightclub is in a building formerly known as St Dominic’s which was a “dry hall” he said.

It was turned into a nightclub in 1987 and up to 2012 hosted an event on Christmas night.

The licence to host the event was revoked in 2012 but was reinstated for this year at a sitting of Letterkenny District Court, despite objections from gardaí and residents.

Mr Carr said the nightclub would open at one minute past midnight and that people gather from across the northwest and stay in the area until 4am or 5am.

As of Tuesday, the Limelight nightclub was unable to provide a comment on the matter.
