A leading Dublin medical consultant has died in an incident on Lough Corrib in Co Galway.

The alarm was raised when an empty angling boat was found drifting between Oughterard and a nearby island.

Valentia Coast Guard tasked a number of units, including the Corrib/Mask rescue team, the Costello Bay Coast Guard and the Irish Coast Guard Sikorsky helicopter from Shannon.

His body was found near Camillaun Island, some 4 miles from where he set off in the Oughterard area on Friday.

Prof Curran, married with five children, was a leading ENT specialist and a head and neck surgeon. He also lectured in University College Dublin.

He was a graduate of NUI Galway and subsequently trained in Canada.

Paying tribute Professor John Crown, consultant oncologist at St Vincent’s, described him as a “ Fine man and outstanding cancer surgeon”.
