Efforts to save child’s life fail after accident in Blackpool

A seven-year-old boy has died after he was thrown from a horse at Blackpool on the northside of Cork city.

The boy, who lived at nearby Traveller accommodation, was thrown from the horse at Spring Lane shortly after 12.30pm. He was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital but died after efforts to revive him failed. The boy’s parents were at his bedside when he died.

The child has as yet to be named. A postmortem is due to be carried out at the hospital. The incident is being treated as a tragic accident.

Lord mayor of Cork, Cllr Catherine Clancy, offered her condolences to the family of the young child following their "devastating loss".

“Some of them are well known in the community having been there a long time. As lord mayor and on behalf of the council I offer my heartfelt sympathy to the family.

“ It is a hard cross for any family to bear. The loss of a child is awful. It is hard at any time but to lose a child is unimaginable.”
