In a nod to what is likely to be a very big talking point in 2015, An Post has described its new, almost rainbow-coloured love stamp as being ideal for the sending of invites to civil union ceremonies.

The romantics in the GPO have unveiled their ninth love stamp which they say will be perfect for Valentine’s cards, wedding invites and “invitations to civil unions”.

The self-adhesive stamp, which will be available from Thursday, February 12th, was designed by Irish artist Oonagh Young. Booklets of 10 will cost €6.80 at post offices and online at irishstamps.ie.

It is the ninth year in a row that An Post has issued love and marriage stamps and this time out it features three colours – pink, red and yellow.

As in the past, An Post has made sure to coincide its release with what is always the most romantic post day of the year, although the calendar is not being kind to the service in 2015.

While An Post expects to handle about 100,000 Valentine cards this year, it's a lot more when St Valentine's Day falls on a week day, and not a Saturday.

A spokeswoman for the postal service had some advice for the “loved-up, lovelorn and lusty”.

For those who may not be accustomed to sending snail mail, she advised to “post early on Thursday for Friday delivery. The latest time for posting is clearly displayed on all postboxes”.

She urged the people to “check that the address and postage is correct before you mail. An Post’s 6, 000 postal cupids will process, transport and deliver your Love with great care and attention, provided we can read your writing and you’ve paid the correct postage!”
