GERMANY: Immigrants who refuse to integrate into German society should be deported, according to the leader of Germany's liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP).
Mr Guido Westerwelle said that if his party formed a new government after next month's election he would make Germany's new immigration laws more stringent.
"I would like that everyone who comes to us learns German and is obliged to pass a proficiency test. Whoever doesn't want that will have to leave," he said in an interview yesterday.
Mr Westerwelle said he was in favour of immigration dictated by Germany's needs but attacked indiscriminate immigration and lack of integration, a criticism often levelled at Germany's two- million-strong Turkish community.
In June the FDP's deputy leader, Mr Jürgen Möllemann, was accused of trying to win support among the Turkish population after he attacked a leader of Germany's Jewish community.
New opinion polls show that an FDP coalition with the Christian Democrats (CDU) would have a comfortable majority, with 51 per cent of popular support. The current government is 10 points behind in the polls.
