IRISH FARMERS' Association president Padraig Walshe has told members of the organisation that he believes they can strengthen their influence by voting Yes in tomorrow's referendum.
In a personal letter to the IFA's 85,000 members, Mr Walshe said the association had secured a commitment from the Government that it would veto an unsatisfactory World Trade Organisation deal.
"The veto has now been secured. The Taoiseach will use it to stop Mandelson. This is the assurance you and I needed to support this referendum," he wrote.
"The importance of farming and our food industry, and the contribution of services and jobs depending on agriculture to the rural economy, has been reaffirmed.
"I sincerely believe we can strengthen our influence by voting Yes in the referendum. I am asking farmers and their families, and rural dwellers to ensure a strong turnout on June 12th," he said. Mr Walshe said he and his family would vote for the treaty tomorrow.
