Excavation work as part of new construction at University Hospital Galway has been suspended following discovery of materials including syringes and bone fragments.

HSE West confirmed that materials, including “glass, fabric” and “a fragment” of bone, had been unearthed by contractors. Initial indications were that the bone fragment was “non-human”, HSE West said in a statement.

One of the glass fragments found had a 1952 date printed on it. HSE West added that the hospital had notified the “relevant authorities”.
