Snow and ice warning issued for Connacht and parts of midlands

Snow in Longford, Met Éireann warns heavy rain will turn to sleet and snow on higher ground

A weather warning is in place with forecasters warning of snow in some areas this afternoon. The AA Roadwatch earlier reported snowfall in Granard, Co Longford, with heavy snow sticking to the road.

Met Éireann has issued a snow and ice warning for the rest of the country including counties Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, and Westmeath.

It said heavy rain early today will turn to sleet and to snow on higher ground. There is a risk of snow on lower levels in the afternoon and evening, with lows of -2 to +3 degrees. Hail, sleet, and snow showers are expected during the night in Ulster, North Connacht and parts of the Munster coast.

The yellow warning (the lowest of the three categories) will remain in place until 9pm.

The Met Éireannwarning comes as forecasters in Britain warned that a cold snap will bring snow today with followed by freezing temperatures in the lead-up to New Year.

The Met Office has issued a cold weather alert for parts of England, saying there is an 80 per cent probability of conditions that could "increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services". It's increased its alert level from yellow to amber in the Midlands and North of England, indicating a 90 per cent chance of snow and freezing conditions.
