Heavy rain is expected to clear across Leinster this morning after a status orange weather warning was lifted at 3am on Sunday.

There will be a "dull, murky start" to the day with patches of drizzle and fog, while rain will linger across Ulster, according to Met Éireann.

It will become dry in many areas later today with some bright or hazy sunny spells and top temperatures of 18 to 21 degrees.

Many roads in the Inishowen area of Co Donegal remain closed after severe flooding last week and AA Roadwatch is urging "extreme caution" for those travelling in the area .

Local authorities had been put on alert on Saturday night after torrential rain was expected overnight in the south of the country.

Up to 50mms of rain (two inches) was expected to fall in the counties of Kerry, Cork and Waterford in a 12-hour period between 3pm on Saturday and 3am on Sunday.

Kerry County Council said the heaviest of the rainfall was predicted over high ground on the Iveragh and Dingle peninsula and may result in localised heavy accumulations.
