A family of five who were reported missing on a Tipperary mountain range yesterday evening have been found safe and well.

The alarm was raised shortly after 8pm on Saturday when two adults and three children became disorientated due to the failing light during a hike in the Knockmealdown Mountains.

They sought assistance from emergency services and a response team including South Eastern Mountain Rescue, Tramore Cliff and Mountain Rescue team and an Irish Coast Guard helicopter was mobilised.

They carried out ‘large scale’ search for the walkers in the Vee Pass and Bay Lough area.

The family was located and brought to safety at 4am and no injuries were reported.

A spokesperson for Mountain Rescue took the opportunity to remind walkers to have a well-planned route in advance of treks, and to be wary of fading light during the winter/spring months.
