GARDAÍ INVESTIGATING the deaths of an elderly couple who were found dead at their home have not ruled out the possibility that they died from accidental gas inhalation.
The elderly couple, who were both in their 70s, were found dead at their home about four miles from Tipperary town.
The discovery was made just after 3pm yesterday in the Mount Bruce area of Co Tipperary.
The emergency services were called and when gardaí arrived on the scene the house was immediately sealed off.
Members of the Garda Technical Bureau were informed and carried out an examination of the house.
The results of the postmortems on the remains were not expected to be known until late last night.
However, one line of inquiry being explored by gardaí was that the deceased were killed as a result of gas poisoning, possibly linked to their cooker.
“It looks like it was a gas leak,” said one source.
There are believed to have been no signs of a break-in at the house and there were no visible marks on the bodies of either of the two victims.
The property showed no signs of having been robbed.
Gardaí believe the couple may have been in the process of cooking a meal at the time that their deaths took place.
The nature of the Garda investigation will become clear when the results of the postmortems become known.
However, Garda sources said foul play was regarded as unlikely at this stage.
