HEAVY RAIN caused flooding across the east coast at the weekend with parts of Dublin particularly badly affected by spot floods.

Rain was heaviest in Dublin and Carlow, Met Éireann said, with 50-60mm recorded over an 18-hour period at weather stations at Dublin airport, Casement Aerodrome, and Oak Park in Carlow.

Dublin City Council flood response crews began work at 6am on Saturday to clear flooded roads.

The northeast of the city was worst affected with flooding in the basements of some premises in Fairview, but there was no major damage. Flood waters quickly receded after gullies or shores were cleared of leaves a spokesman for the council said.

The weather is set to remain unsettled and showery this week but rains are not expected to be as heavy as at the weekend, according to Met Éireann.

After a clear night cloud will increase everywhere from this morning and rain will arrive in the northwest and west and a band of rain will then spread steadily southeastwards during the day .

Tonight will be mostly dry but there will be more scattered showers in the north and northwest today, and while many areas will remain dry, there could be spot flooding where showers occur.

Another spell of rain is set to spread from the northwest to all parts on Wednesday, followed by clearer weather, with scattered showers.

It will be very windy all week, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday with strong southwest winds veering westerly. Temperatures will be lower than recently with highs of just 13 to 16 degrees.
