Gardaí are stepping up their search for the driver of a car involved in an apparent hit-and-run incident in Dublin following the death of the victim, 20-year-old Lily Hastings-Bass.
She died in St James's Hospital, Dublin, on Thursday afternoon after her family decided to switch off the life-support machine. Her parents and older sister, Alice (23), were by her bedside.
Ms Hastings-Bass, from Newbury, in Berkshire, England, had just started studying at Trinity College Dublin and was eight weeks into her first year.
She was on her way home with five friends in the Rathgar area of Dublin on Sunday, November 26th, when she was hit by a car outside a petrol station.
Gardaí in Rathmines are studying CCTV footage of the incident which shows the car travelling at speed through the forecourt of the garage at the junction of Grosvenor Road and Rathgar road before hitting Ms Hastings-Bass. She was thrown into the air and suffered multiple broken bones as well as severe head injuries.
The car left the scene and appeared to speed off towards Harold's Cross. Gardaí say footage of the incident is of poor quality and they are now watching footage from other CCTV cameras in the area as well as in Harold's Cross in the hope of a breakthrough.
Lily's father, John Hastings-Bass, described his daughter as a "lovely, vibrant girl" who loved Dublin.
"I would appeal, as a father who has lost his daughter in this way, to anyone to come forward."
