An elderly woman discovered a wedding and engagement ring were missing after a man escaped from her home shortly after she found him hiding behind her bedroom door.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has appealed for witnesses and information about the incident which happened in the Ballymena Road area of Antrim town on Saturday night.

A police spokesperson said they received a report about 6.50pm on Saturday that the woman, aged in her 80s, had gone upstairs to close a bedroom window.

Challenge and escape

As she was leaving the bedroom, she saw a man hiding behind the bedroom door. When she challenged him, he walked down the stairs and made his escape, the spokesperson said.

“The victim has since discovered that several rings, including a gold wedding band, an engagement ring and an eternity ring are missing from her jewellery box. This has been an extremely distressing ordeal for the victim and our inquiries are continuing.”
