A female passenger of a car was killed in a collision in Co Carlow this afternoon.

The woman, in her mid-70s, was fatally injured when the car she was travelling in hit an SUV at Kilcarrig, Bagenalstown, at about 2.45pm.

She was pronounced dead at the scene and her body removed to Carlow mortuary.

The driver of the car, also female, in her early 70s, was removed to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny with serious injuries.

The female driver of the SUV, in her mid-30s, was taken to the same hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The road has since reopened after Garda forensic collision investigators examined the scene.

Gardaí are investigating.

Detectives had earlier appealed for witnesses after a man's body was discovered at the side of a road in Co Louth. A passerby found the man, aged 35, at Carnalogue, Louth village, at about 4.40am this morning.

A motorcyclist was killed earlier this weekend in a crash with a car on Friday night at Lismeagh, Smithboro, Co Monaghan.

The crash happened at about 9pm on the N54, the main Monaghan to Clones Road outside Smithboro village.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
