A 40-year-old man was charged on Saturday with failing to comply with the provisions of the 2001 Sex Offenders Act at a special sitting of Galway District Court.

David Ellis, whose has had an address at Vivian Road, Sketty, Swansea, Wales, was arrested in Galway city centre on Friday evening.

Detective Padraig Healy of Galway Garda station gave evidence of arrest charge and caution, and said that Mr Ellis made no reply when he was charged at 12.35am.

An application was made for Mr Ellis to be remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court next Friday.

Judge Gerry Furlong was told the defendant was not working at present and that his circumstances would warrant an application for legal aid.

Judge Furlong was asked to request that Mr Ellis be detained in single cell accommodation at Castlerea prison in Co Roscommon.

Mr Ellis did not speak during the four minute hearing.
