Enda Dolan, an 18-year-old from Killyclogher in Co Tyrone, was hit by a van on the Malone Road in the early hours of October 15th.

The first-year architecture student at Queen’s University had been returning to his accommodation.

At Belfast Magistrates' Court, David Lee Stewart (30) faced charges of causing the student's death by dangerous driving and causing his death by careless driving while unfit.

Mr Stewart, of Gray’s Park Avenue in the city, is further accused of failing to stop and failing to remain at the scene of a crash causing injury.

His co-defendant, William Ross Casement (20), from Belvoir Drive in Belfast, is charged with assisting an offender and aiding and abetting in failing to remain at the scene of an incident.

Mr Casement is also accused in connection with a separate indecent behaviour incident which occurred on the same date.

Both men were released on continuing bail to return to court next month.

Mr Dolan’s death occurred just weeks after a crash barrier was removed from the scene of the collision. New safety measures were later installed.
