Two teenagers and man in 40s held in separate Garda stations after Athy killing

Two teenagers and a man in his 40s remain in custody following a fatal shooting in Athy, Co Kildare, on Friday evening.

The three are being held separately at Leixlip, Naas and Kildare Garda stations.

Jason Doogue (22) was shot three times in the chest outside his home in Greenhills on Friday at approximately 5pm.

The young man was sitting on the wall outside his home chatting with a group of friends when a gunman on a BMX bicycle approached him. The gunman, wearing a balaclava, fired directly at Mr Doogue.

The victim fell backwards over the wall and the gunman then leaned over the wall and discharged two further shots at him before leaving the scene.

Emergency services were called and Mr Doogue was taken to Naas General Hospital for emergency surgery, but was pronounced dead less than two hours later.

Gardaí have questioned neighbours who may have witnessed the attack and have called for anyone who may have seen the incident to contact them.

A youth in his early teens was arrested on Saturday afternoon and brought to Leixlip Garda Station where he is being detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007.

A second youth, in his late teens, was arrested on Saturday evening and taken to Naas Garda station. He is also being detained under Section 50.

A man in his early 40s arrested on Friday evening in connection with the shooting remains in custody in Kildare Garda station.

All three can be detained without charge for up to seven days.
