During the brief hearing a PSNI detective said the murder was not believed to be terrorist related.

Mr McLaughlin spoke only to confirm his name and that he understood the charges.

He was remanded in custody to appear again before the court via video-link next month.

More than a dozen supporters outside cheered him as he arrived and left the courthouse at Bishop Street in central Derry.
