Gardaí have resumed a search for a missing man, named locally as Derek Tyrrell (33), who was swept away by the River Nore on Sunday.

Mr Tyrrell, a cousin of Kilkenny All-Ireland hurling champions Jackie Tyrrell and Tommy Walsh, was last seen by friends at a house party in the St Canice's Mill area of Thomastown in the early hours of Sunday morning.

According to gardaí, Mr Tyrrell was seen near the edge of the swollen river before being swept away by the current.

A large search operation involving gardaí, costguard and members of the local civil defence was called off last night due to adverse weather conditions.
