An off-duty garda is understood to have been killed in a single vehicle road collision in Co Wexford on Wednesday night.

It is understood the officer was in his thirties and based in a Co Wicklow Garda station. He was off-duty at the time of the crash and was the only occupant in the car.

A passing motorist found the driver in the crashed car in Wells, Gorey about 11.40pm.

Emergency services brought the driver to Wexford General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Gardaí are investigating the crash and the scene has been preserved for forensic examination.

A spokeswoman for Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc) confirmed the incident had been referred to it by Garda Síochána.

“GSOC will examine it in the normal way,” she said.
