A 46-year-old woman has appeared in court charged with the murder of her two-year old son in Dublin on Thursday.
Hazel Waters with an address at Ridge Hall in Ballybrack, Co Dublin was remanded in custody by Judge John Coughlan when she appeared at a special sitting of Dublin District Court this morning.
Muhammad Hassan Khan’s body was found in a top-floor apartment in the Ridge Hall complex at Shanganagh Road, Ballybrack, by gardaí after the alarm was raised by someone known to the boy, shortly after 2pm on Thursday.
The toddler had suffered stab wounds to his upper body.
Detective Joe O’Hara told the court Ms Waters was formally arrested at 10.30pm last night at Dún Laoghaire Garda station and charged with murder at 10.52pm.
She did not say anything in response to the charge, the court heard.
The court heard that Ms Waters had specifically asked not to be assessed psychiatrically but the court ruled that it should be considered while she remains on remand.
An application for free legal aid was also made on behalf of Ms Waters by defence solicitor Padraig O’Donovan.
Ms Waters is due back at Dublin District Court on Wednesday.
Ms Waters, who appeared in court dressed in a black suit and a grey top, showed no sign of emotion throughout the five minute hearing.
