Local Authorities are being encouraged by the Minister for Transport to introduce more 30km/h speed limit zones in residential areas to protect vulnerable road users.

Paschal Donohoe has asked each local authority to identify a number of residential areas where this limit can be introduced in 2015. He said outside of Dublin very few councils were using this speed limit.

While new 30km/h zones will not be enforced with speed cameras, councils will be encouraged to install additional speed ramps and place 30km/h speed limit signs to make clear that these are low speed zones.

“I would expect community gardaí and normal Garda patrols will play a role in monitoring these limits,” said the Minister.

He said the measure was a response to the increase in deaths last year among vulnerable road users; cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists.
