Man in his 60s dies following suspected assault in Galway

A man in his 60s has died at a house in Connemara, Co Galway following a suspected assault.

An ambulance was called to the house in Ballinahown in the south of the county early on Sunday morning where they found the man with serious injuries.

Medical personnel alerted gardaí who arrived a short time later.

The injured man was brought to University Hospital Galway where he later died.

A man in his 70s was arrested and is being questioned at Galway Garda station in connection with the death. It is understood he was known to the victim.

Detectives at Salthill are following a definite line of inquiry and said they are not seeking anyone else in relation to the death. The suspect can be questioned for up to 12 hours before being charged or released.

The scene has been preserved for an examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.

The office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a postmortem is expected to be carried out on Monday.

Gardaí said the postmortem results will determine the direction of their investigation.
