Man charged in connection with fatal Athy shooting

Gardaí also arrest fifth person as part of inquiry into killing of Jason Doogue (22)

Gardaí have charged a man aged in his 40s in connection with the fatal shooting of Jason Doogue (22) in Athy, Co Kildare last week.

The suspect is due to appear before a special sitting of Naas District Court on Friday night.

Mr Doogue was shot a number of times outside his home in Greenhills on Friday, August 20th, at about 5pm.

He had been sitting on a wall talking with a group of friends when a gunman wearing a balaclava approached on a BMX bicycle.

Gardaí arrested a fifth person, a man in his 30s, in Co Kildare on Friday in connection with the investigation.

He was being held at Naas Garda station. A woman also remained in custody.

Firearms and ammunition

During the investigation which led to the latest arrest, gardaí seized four firearms, a quantity of ammunition and controlled drugs following searches of properties in the Athy area.

Two other males, a juvenile and a man aged in his late teens, have been released from custody without charge.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
