Police in Newry have appealed for witnesses following the assault which occurred yesterday evening in the area of Charlemont Square East, Bessbrook.

The child was taken to hospital following the incident.

A man in his 20s was later arrested and is being questioned, said PSNI Supt Simon Walls.

Mr Walls asked anyone who was at Charlemont Square East in Bessbrook at about 7.45pm yesterday to contact police on the non-emergency number 101.
