A 25-year-old man has been remanded in custody after he was charged with the murder of his mother in Cork city earlier this week.

Paul Horgan was brought before Cork District Court on Wednesday morning charged with the murder of his mother Marian (61) at the family home at Murmont Avenue, Montenotte on November 23rd.

Ms Horgan, a mother of three, was found with stab wounds in the kitchen of the family home at about 8am on November 23rd and was pronounced dead at the scene by a local doctor.

Det Garda Mark Durcan gave evidence of arresting Mr Horgan at Murmont Avenue, Montenotte at 8am on November 23rd and bringing him to Mayfield Garda station.

He then gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and told the court Mr Horgan made no reply to the charge after it was put to him at around 9.30pm on November 24th.

Insp Adrian Gamble applied for a remand in custody and Judge Leo Malone remanded Mr Horgan in custody to appear again on December 1st for service of the book of evidence.

Judge Malone granted Mr Horgan free legal aid after being informed by defence solicitor Diarmuid Kelleher that he was a student and unable to afford his own solicitor.

Mr Kelleher also applied to have Mr Horgan psychiatrically assessed while on remand. Judge Malone directed that he receive the appropriate assessment while in custody.

Dressed in a white shirt and jeans, Mr Horgan sat with his head bowed and did not speak during the three minute hearing in Courtroom No 4 at the Washington Street Courthouse in Cork.
