An Irish woman (24) is being treated in hospital after she received stab wounds to her face at a backpacker's hostel in Sydney, Australia early this morning.

Two German men, both aged 19, also received stab wounds. One had stab wounds to the neck and the other had stab wounds to his arm, police said. None of the injuries are life threatening, New South Wales police said in a statement.

It is alleged that the three became involved in an argument with a man at the hostel on Pitt Street at Haymarket, police said in a statement.

A fourth man intervened to help the group of backpackers before the man fled the scene. All three backpackers were treated by ambulance paramedics before being taken to St Vincent’s Hospital. The scene was examined by specialist forensic officers.
