Utility company warns recipients not to click link or provide personal information

Irish Water has warned the public to be aware of fake emails purporting to be from the organisation.

The mails, titled “Your Irish Water Account - Action Required” should be discarded, it said.

“Irish Water will never ask customers to update personal banking information in this way and customers should always delete emails requesting this information,” it said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Do not reply or click on the link provided. Do not provide personal or financial details.”

It said it had also requested that a “fraudulent” website be shut down.

“Irish Water is aware that during the refund process in particular that attempts may be made to deceive customers with phishing emails. We have put additional resources in place in attempt to mitigate against these phishing campaigns.”

Those who have responded to such contacts have been advised to change any revealed passwords and PIN numbers, contact their bank and review financial statements.

Gardaí should also be contacted, it said.
