Two elderly brothers were assaulted in their home in the early hours of the morning by a gang of masked men.

Gardai are investigating the incident which occurred at about 1am on Monday at a house in Boleylaan, Cortoon, Co Galway.

The brothers - aged 72 and 77 - were woken by the men who demanded money although it is understood that in the end nothing was taken from the property.

Both men received minor facial injuries during the raid and received attention but their condition is not serious. No weapons were used.

Gardai are treating the incident as an aggravated burglary and carried out a technical examination of the property on Tuesday.

There is not thought to be any pattern of increased home raids in the run up to Christmas. One garda source said: “There is a particular type of person who does this and they do it all year round.”

Anybody with any information can contact the garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any station.
