A man has appeared in court charged in connection with a stabbing attack on a woman in Dublin early yesterday.

Rose Kenny (46) suffered a number of stab wounds to her neck, throat and stomach during an incident in the stairwell of a flats complex at School Street in the south inner city.

She was taken by ambulance to St James’ Hospital where her condition is understood to be critical but stable.

The man was named in court as Denis Leahy (48) of no fixed abode.

Det Garda Richard Kelly told judge Patricia McNamara the defendant had recently returned from abroad and little was known about him.

Det Garda Kelly gave evidence of charging Mr Leahy with causing serious harm under Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, at 9.45am today in Kevin Street Garda station.

The court was also told the defendant was applying for legal aid but could not recall a PPS number and had no social welfare documentation.

Mr Leahy who was dressed in a red T-shirt and black track suit bottoms with blue runners was remanded in custody to the October 1st sitting of Cloverhill District Court, where he will appear via video link.

Remanding Mr Leahy, Judge McNamara offered the Garda a week to make enquiries as to Mr Leahy’s status and PPS number.

“They are serious charges” she said.
