A 23-year-old man has appeared at Portlaoise District Court charged with the murder of Christy Daly.

Ross Allen of Kilmonaghan Lodge, Clara, Co Offaly is accused of murdering the 47-year-old father-of-six at Kilbride in Clara on December 29th, 2013.

Det Sgt Jer Glavin said the defendant made no reply when charged and cautioned at Portlaoise Garda station at 9.29pm on Thursday night.

Mr Daly’s remains were discovered in a drain at Bog Road, Kilbride, Clara on January 7th.

A post mortem revealed he had been shot a number of times.

Garda Inspector Kieran Keyes applied to have the defendant remanded in custody to Cloverhil Prison.

Applying for legal aid, solicitor Aideen Pendred said her client wasn’t working at the moment.

Judge Catherine Staines granted legal aid and remanded Mr Allen in custody to reappear before a sitting of Cloverhill District Court on February 27th.
