A man has been remanded in custody charged over a gun and ammunition seizure after gardaí stopped a car in Dublin at the weekend.
The car was searched near the Naas dual carriageway shortly before 3pm on Saturday and during course of a search a firearm and ammunition were recovered.
Another car was stopped at the Long Mile Road. Two men were arrested and both were detained under the provisions of section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act in Dublin Garda stations.
On Monday, Richard O'Reilly (31) of Windmill Road, Crumlin, Dublin was brought to appear before Judge Michael Walsh at Dublin District Court charged with unlawful possession of 14 rounds of ammunition, a Glock 26 handgun and a stolen Volkswagen Golf car at Walkinstown Avenue on June 18th.
Detective Ian Pemberton of the Garda Drugs and Organised Bureau told the court that the charges were put to Mr O’Reilly at 9.55pm at Crumlin station on Sunday after which the accused “made no reply to the charges after caution”.
Det Gda Pemberton also said that he would be objecting to bail. However, defence solicitor Anarine McAllister told the court that there was no application for bail at this stage.
Dressed in a black hoodie, white t-shirt and runners, and navy tracksuit bottoms, Mr O’Reilly did not address the court and has not yet indicated how he will plead.
Judge Walsh remanded him in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Thursday.
He granted free legal aid after noting the Garda had no objection and that the accused is not working.
The second man, who had been detained on Saturday, was released without charge on Sunday night and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
