Mr Ward appeared before Judge Victor Blake in Dublin District Court sitting in the courts complex in Parkgate Street on Saturday afternoon. He was wearing a grey hooded top and did not speak in court.

He was remanded in custody by Judge Blake ahead of a further appearance at Cloverhill District Court next Friday morning at 10am.

The solicitor acting for the accused, Wayne Kenny, asked the court that his client be given a medical assessment while in custody, as concerns had been expressed about his mental health.

He was granted free legal aid.
