It's 11 years since the Manchester-based BBC Philharmonic last visited Dublin, and Monday's concert came about only by the orchestra being available in the wake of a cancellation from the Royal Philharmonic. Those years have seen a transformation in its public profile, mainly through its work in concert and on disc with Yan Pascal Tortelier, whose successful stint with the Ulster Orchestra launched him into even greater things. Monday's programme offers two Russian showpieces, Stravinsky's Firebird Suite and the Ravel orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. It also includes a new work, Pemenos with Mermaids and Angels, by Peter Maxwell Davies (right), who has an ongoing association with the orchestra, and will conduct the premiere of his work in Dublin.
