The new British ambassador to Ireland is Dominick Chilcott, who was expelled from Iran at the end of last year after just a month as ambassador to that country.

The Iranian parliament last November voted to expel Mr Chilcott in retaliation for the economic sanctions imposed by the European Union over the country’s nuclear programme.

Mr Chilcott was deputy head of mission at the British embassy to the United States before his appointment to Iran.

A career diplomat, he joined the British foreign office in 1982 and has served in Turkey, Portugal, the EU representation in Brussels and Sri Lanka.

He replaces Julian King, who has been appointed as head of the Northern Ireland office after two years as ambassador to Ireland.
