THE NUMBER of bicycle parking stands in Dublin city is to be increased from a current 1,000 to 10,000 over the next 10 years under a Dublin City Council scheme.
However, the council intends to provide only up to 4,000 stands out of its own resources and will require city businesses to fund the remaining cycle spaces.
Cycling has seen a recent surge in popularity with the numbers of cyclists up 7 per cent in the last year and 30 per cent over the past five years, the council said.
The Department of Transport has set a national target of 10 per cent of commuter trips to be made by bicycle by 2020, which would result in a five-fold increase in numbers in the next 10 years.
