Aquaculture to get funding boost of €13m

The aquaculture industry in Ireland is to receive a funding boost of €13.3 million.

The aquaculture industry in Ireland is to receive a funding boost of €13.3 million.

It was announced yesterday that 41 private projects - 28 shellfish and 13 finfish - and three public projects would benefit from the grants.

The projects cover a range of activities including the development of new species, the expansion and modernisation of salmon and trout farms and the expansion of shellfish farm facilities.

Some €2 million has also been allocated to seven projects under the Technical Environment Support Programme.

These projects aim to improve the environmental impact of the marine-based salmonid sector through improved production efficiency.

The largest single grant is to go to Meitheal Eisce Teo in Galway, which will receive €1.6 million.

Other recipients of large grants include Feirm Farraige Oileann Chliara Teaoranta, Clare Island and Tower Aqua Products Ltd in Cork.

Making the announcement, Minister of State for the Marine John Brown said those involved in the aquaculture industry could work and plan with confidence for the future.

"The aid available under the National Development Plan provides vital support for the continued development of the sector, as is being demonstrated by the level of assistance given to promote modernisation and expansion."
