OUTDOOR TOURISM:THOUSANDS OF people are expected to gather today and tomorrow in the RDS Simmonscourt Pavilion for The Adventure Weekend which showcases all the adrenalin-pumping tourism activities this country has to offer.

The event, the first of its kind to take place in Ireland, will offer visitors the chance to try their hand at a range of different adventure sports and activities under one roof, and it will also feature talks from some of the most active adventurers in the country.

A 60-metre zipline has been put in place to allow visitors travel at speed across the roof of the venue, a mini-bungee jumping platform is in place and a vertical wind tunnel is giving people the chance to simulate the sensation of a parachute jump.

The wind tunnel, brought from France for the event, uses an aeroplane engine and two propellers to generate 250km/h winds which will blow the brave 40ft into the air with the help of a winged flight suit.

Among the speakers today and tomorrow will be Pat Falvey, one of the world’s most experienced adventurers. He has conquered Mount Everest twice and walked to the South Pole, and was the first person in the world to climb the seven highest mountains on the seven continents twice.

One of Ireland’s most accomplished surfers, Richie Fitzgerald, will also give a talk and the first Irish diver to stand on the deck of the Titanic, Rory Golden, will tell tales from the deep.

Tickets to the event cost €15 with discounts available for students, OAPs and families. While some of the activities on offer are available at no cost there will be additional charges for others, including the paintballing and karting.
