Our wedding story: Friday the 13th proves a charm

Spiritual and humanist marriages arising from a wandering dog, ghoulish liasions and Friday 13th dates

Audrey-Maura Ferguson & Cormac Meaney

Audrey-Maura, a solicitor, grew up in Zambia where her parents moved for work in the 1980s. When she was 16, the family returned to Dublin.

Almost eight years ago, she met Cormac from Salthill in Galway on a night out in Dublin.

He proposed on Friday the 13th in February 2015, in Chameleon Restaurant, Temple Bar at the same table they had sat at for their first date. The following day they flew to Antwerp to buy Audrey-Maura's engagement ring.

The bride, daughter of Frank and Colette, designed her own dress and, while visiting her father in Dubai, where he was working, met a designer who made it. She wore a veil with her name embroidered on it.

As Friday the 13th had proved to be lucky for Audrey-Maura and Cormac, they married on that day this May.

During the humanist ceremony at Tinakilly House, Co Wicklow – "the only venue we viewed" – the couple's friend Shane Cluskey played piano.

Clodagh, the bride's sister, was maid of honour along with bridesmaids Rebecca Hawkes and Rebecca Meaney and bridesman Aaron Gracey. Ruby, the flower-girl, is the groom's niece.

The best man was Cormac's brother Dara Meaney and friends David Cooke, Eddie Molloy, Johann Ott and Billy Casserly were groomsmen. The groom's parents are Dolie and Damian Meaney.

The wedding cake, made of cheese, was served at the drinks reception in the garden, followed by dinner and dancing in the pavilion overlooking the sea.

The first dance was to VCR by The XX – a song that reminds them of their first holiday together in Spain.

The bride’s favourite parts of the day were, “Cormac’s speech and having my closest friends and family all together.”

And her husband’s? “Seeing Audrey-Maura walk up the aisle and hearing my dad’s speech.”

The couple, who live in Ranelagh, honeymooned in San Francisco, Sonoma, Las Vegas and Cancun, Mexico.
