Toyota’s sensible-socks small car keeps doing what it does best - providing reliable, safe, roomy transport for not a lot of money. You could argue (and many do) that the Yaris is a bit soul-less, and less than fun to drive and there’s some truth in that.

However, it’s actually better than its reputation would have you believe, and there’s always the naughty cousin lurking in the cupboard; the GRMN supercharged hot hatch. Only 400 of those were built and you can’t buy one anymore, but it proved that not only could the Yaris ‘do’ fun, but that it could also ‘do’ a convincing impression of a 1990s touring car racer. The hybrid model is probably more practical for most of us, and it’s more efficient, over a wider range of performance, than it used to be. Basic 1.0-litre a perfectly good small hatch.
