The long-held wisdom is never to judge a book by its cover, but of course we all actually do. If we didn't, why would book shops display their wares thusly, and why would publishers include tantalising blurb and adoring quotations on the cover? To judge a Suzuki Baleno by its cover, or at least its styling, would be quick and simple – dull Japanese small hatch. Move along.

Ah, but this is why we were taught the old maxim. Look inside – it’s roomier than almost all rivals. It’s also very well equipped, with a big touchscreen and lots of safety toys, not to mention air conditioning. And its 1.0-litre BoosterJet engine is a total joy – revvy, smooth and with a zippy exhaust note. Frugal, too. Okay, so it won’t win any beauty contests (this is from the same company that gave us the handsome Swift and Vitara?) and it’s only fine to drive, not exceptional, but it’s big value for money and sweet-natured with it. Judge on the cover and you’re missing out.
