The owner of 88 Goatstown Road, Dublin, a sizeable detached property set well back from the road and shielded from traffic by a high granite wall, bought the house at auction in 2006.
It was the size of the site that caught her attention. A surveyor by profession, the property, which is set on an east-west axis and on a third of an acre of grounds, “was unique”, she says.
The double-fronted detached house, which dates from 1939, is laid out as it was then, and has a lovely sense of balance throughout. The two-storey home has what looks like two wings to either side of the main house. To the left is a single storey property that adjoins the main house and has its own separate access. Both husband and wife have offices here, and it could be used by any profession for same.

The front door opens to a fine square hall with a recessed window seat and original maple flooring. To the left is a dual aspect sitting room with limestone mantle and a wood-burning stove that the couple sourced from Fenton Fires in Greystones. Sliding doors to the rear lead out to a pink sandstone patio.
Adjacent to this is a very bright family room where the children have installed a piano and full drum kit. There is almost a full wall of glass in this room, which overlooks the garden, washing it in light.
The kitchen, which spans the depth of the house, is to the right, accessed via a set of steps. This dual aspect space has a small bay window to the front as well as a second front door, allowing access directly with shopping from the car. A long narrow island runs through the middle of the room, and is topped with a beautiful piece of old marble that came from a greengrocer’s in Leixlip. Underfoot is Amtico flooring, and there is direct access to the garden with ample room for large-format patio furniture.
The garden is unlike anything you normally find in modern homes. Running to 37m/122ft long, it can enjoy all-day sun thanks in part to the relatively low-lying houses to the rear. There is a second patio area where the family catches the evening sun when dining. To the back a felled mature tree forms the base for a very cute treehouse. There are also several bike and wood sheds.
Upstairs the five bedrooms – three doubles and two singles – are all bright spaces that have been dry-lined and replastered. The master, a dormer room, has bespoke wardrobes built into the eaves of by Alan Brown Design and a sizeable en suite with lots of walnut drawer and niche storage.
A utility room is located to the rear of the offices with smart storage including separate drawers for whites and colours, and compact drying racks that pull down when in use.
The property, which measures 219sq m/2,352sq ft, is seeking €1.7 million through agent Beirne Wise.
