From the sleekly contemporary right back to the Victorian, Anglesea Road features a mixture of housing styles – though all tend to be of a similar, discreet brand of elegance. Number 97 falls neatly into this category. Built around 1840, this 240sq m (2,600sq ft) end-of-terrace has been a very well-placed family home for almost 180 years.

The current owners bought the house in 1986, and raised a very happy family here. During this time, they also remodelled the kitchen, which is located at garden level and designed in the French provincial style, with plenty of space for family suppers, and a utility room off. The kitchen is warmed by an Aga, and the utility room has outdoor access, though you’re more likely to welcome your guests at the front door on the first floor, which is reached via granite steps, through a pretty front garden.

Also at garden level is a pretty sittingroom with a solid fuel stove. This could double up as a fourth bedroom (the other three, two of which are ensuite, are on the second floor), but it is currently the owners’ favourite room when the evenings draw in. During the summer, they enjoy the southwest-facing back garden to the full, and a pair of pretty summer houses serve as spots for enjoying morning coffee, or evening meals when the days are long and bright.

The owners are keen gardeners, and the whole house has been beautifully maintained. The two formal reception rooms on the first floor are clearly a family pride, and you can easily imagine dinners at which no one wants to get up from the table and end the night. There is on-street parking out front, but your own car will be neatly tucked away in its own off-street spot to the rear – quite a boon this close to town.

Of course, it's not only close to the city centre, but also near the villages of Donnybrook and Ballsbridge, Herbert Park, and plenty of sporting clubs, cricket grounds and the RDS itself, home of the famous Royal Dublin Horse Show and regular Leinster rugby showdowns. Anglesea Road is also a very neighbourly street, with young families, and good schools within walking distance.

“Yes, whoever buys this house will be lucky,” say the owners, who are downsizing. “It has been happy, and lucky for us.”

Number 97 Anglesea Road is seeking €1.8 million through agent Sherry FitzGerald.
