The former home of Ryanair founder Tony Ryan, Lyons Demesne in Kildare, has dropped its asking price by a further €20 million to €30 million.

The Georgian extravaganza, on 600 acres, has been quietly on the market through Christie’s since 2009 and has slowly worked its way down from the original asking price of €80 million, the highest price ever sought for an Irish home. This latest valuation was set by Knight Frank, who this week came on board as joint agents for the property.

Ronayne O’Mahony of Knight Frank was upbeat at the prospect of finding a buyer for Ireland’s most expensive house. He says three or four individuals have shown interest, and adds that he’s currently seeking landing slots for jets when viewers fly in to visit the estate next month. “There are Americans of Irish descent based in the English home counties looking for a real trophy home, and Lyons Demesne would have that cache as one of the best houses in Ireland.”

The 1790s house features exemplary Georgian architecture and a lavish drawingroom with museum-quality frescoes. It has 10 guest bedroom suites, a private cinema, and a half-Olympic-sized swimming pool. The grounds include a 22-acre lake, a private landing strip and stables.

Tony Ryan, who died in 2007, bought Lyons in 1996 and renovated it completely. At one point the estate was valued at more than €100 million. The Village at Lyons, a commercial enterprise on 30 acres on the estate, that includes a restaurant, businesses and houses, is not included in the sale.
