Three major jewellery auctions in Dublin next week may help to solve some Christmas shopping conundrums for men – always a fraught business. The Temple Bar-based auctioneer John Weldon offers this advice: "I am regularly asked by men buying jewellery what should they buy for their wife or girlfriend (and in some cases both for the wife and girlfriend).

“My advice is this, buy her something which she can wear and that will fit her. Avoid, if possible a ring, simply because it might not fit her on Christmas morning and you would run the risk that she won’t like it. A much safer bet is a pair of diamond earrings, diamond bracelet or necklace – she can wear them and feel wonderful”.

Mr Weldon believes that “there are only three rings” that men, shopping alone, “should choose for that lady” – an engagement ring, a wedding ring and an eternity ring (“on the birth of baby”). For any other type of ring, he suggests that men “should always have her input, just to be safe”.
